ULTRAKILL – A Shooter That Makes You Feel Slower the More You Play

When I first launched ULTRAKILL, I thought it was just another retro-style FPS. With its angular graphics and dated color palette, it looked much like games from decades past.

But that impression vanished within minutes.

The screen is rarely still. Monsters rush in from all directions, bullets fly constantly, and your character must slide, jump, and change direction incessantly. Standing still for too long usually leads to a grim outcome.

ULTRAKILL doesn't force players to master dozens of complex systems. The objective is simple: push forward and survive. It sounds easy, but the reality is quite different.

Fast-paced combat

Many shooters allow you to find a safe spot and pick off targets one by one. ULTRAKILL gives you almost no time for that.

Some levels feel like being thrown into the eye of a storm. Enemies spawn continuously, forcing you to react instantly. The more you hesitate, the more health you lose.

It is this pacing that makes every level feel intense. Even after clearing an area, replaying it can still lead to mistakes.

An arsenal for more than just shooting

What draws many players to ULTRAKILL is how the weapons function.

Each gun has unique characteristics. Initially, players tend to stick to basic firing methods. However, after a few hours of play, various tricks and combos begin to emerge.

Some maneuvers look simple but require significant practice to pull off. This is why ULTRAKILL gameplay videos often vary wildly, even when covering the same level.

Controls

  • W, A, S, D: Movement.
  • Left Mouse Button: Fire. Right-click: Secondary ability.
  • Space: Jump.
  • Shift: Slide or dash.
  • Scroll wheel: Switch weapons.
  • E: Interact.

A few tips for beginners

Don't stand still trying to aim too precisely. ULTRAKILL rewards mobility rather than stationary play.

If a level feels too difficult, try changing your weapon tactics instead of just focusing on better aim. Often, a fresh approach works better than simply relying on quick reflexes.

Also, take the time to master dashing; it is a skill that frequently saves your life during battles against large groups of enemies.

Overall verdict

ULTRAKILL isn't the kind of game you play to unwind after work; it demands your near-constant focus. In return, the feeling of conquering a tough level or pulling off a spectacular move is incredibly addictive.

If you enjoy high-speed FPS games and want to put your reflexes to the test, ULTRAKILL is definitely worth checking out.
